Abstract . Fluoroquinolone-resistance in Shigella is among the serious antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threats. We investigated the genomic epidemiology of fluoroquinolone resistant (FQR) strains of S. sonnei and S. flexneri from 2015 to 2022 in Spain and Portugal. We determined the AMR profiles of 416 isolates (S. flexneri and S. sonnei) and FQR isolates were subjected to whole-genome sequencing. The percentage of FQR isolates gradually increased to reach 38% and 80% of S. flexneri and S…

Abstract . Background . Shigella sonnei has caused sexually transmitted enteric infections in men who have sex with men (MSM) in Vancouver. We recently observed a high rate of multidrug-resistant (MDR) S. sonnei bacteremia among persons experiencing homelessness (PEH). We aim to describe the wider epidemiology, clinical outcomes, and genomics of S. sonnei infections over time. Methods . A retrospective review of 163 patients with S. sonnei infections was undertaken from 2015 –2022…

ilu Alemayehu, Getenet Beyene . Background Shigellosis is an acute gastroenteritis infection and one of Ethiopia’s most common causes of morbidity and mortality, especially in children under five. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has spread quickly among Shigella species due to inappropriate antibiotic use, inadequacies of diagnostic facilities, and unhygienic conditions. This study aimed to characterize Shigella sonnei (S. sonnei) using whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia…

Therefore, the objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the overall prevalence of Shigella, the distribution of species, and the patterns of antimicrobial resistance across Africa. . . . rus was detected in 11% of children with diarrhea (OR 2.48, P=0.002). Comparison of population attributable fractions (PAF) show that Shigella (PAF=11%) and ETEC-eltB (PAF=12%) have replaced rotavirus as the main causative agents. The PAF for rotavirus had declined from 41% pre-vaccination to 6.5%, indicating that rotavirus has become one among several similarly important causes of childhood diarrhea in Rwanda. A rotavirus genotype shift to G3P[8] points at the importance of continued genotype surveillance.

. Abstract. Epidemiology of shigellosis has drastically changed in recent years due to globalization and sexual risk behaviors. Here, through whole-genome sequencing, we characterized two ESBL-producing Shigella sonnei strains (ShSoBUH1 and ShSoBUH2) carrying a blaCTX−M−15 among men who have sex with men (MSM), who had not recently traveled and presented sexual risk behaviors…

al State. Socio-demographic data and relevant clinical characteristics were collected using a standardized questionnaire. After enrichment with Selenite F broth, Salmonella serovars were isolated using MacConkey, Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate, and Salmonella Shigella agar. The Salmonella serovars were characterized through a series of biochemical tests. The antimicrobial resistance patterns were determined using the modified Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion technique…

development investments and informing global public health policies to combat AMR. Gram-negative bacteria and rifampicin-resistant M tuberculosis remain critical priority pathogens, underscoring their persistent threat and the limitations of the current antibacterial pipeline. Focused efforts and sustained investments in novel antibacterials are needed to address AMR priority pathogens, which include high-burden antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Salmonella and Shigella spp, N gonorrhoeae, and S aureus.
