by Carolina Bertilsson, Maria Vretemark, Henrik Lund, Peter Lingström . In a late Swedish Viking Age population dating from around 10th-12th century AD, the prevalence, distribution and location of dental caries were studied. Tooth wear, other dental pathology and anatomical variations were identified and recorded clinically and radiographically. A total of 3293 teeth were analyzed from 171 individuals with complete and partial dentitions, of which 133 were permanent and 38 deciduous/mixed dentition. The …

The diagnosis of bacterial infections continues to rely on culture, a slow process in which antibiotic susceptibility profiles of potential pathogens are made available to clinicians 48h after sampling, at best. Recently, clinical metagenomics (CMg), the metagenomic sequencing of samples with the purpose of identifying microorganisms and determining their susceptibility to antimicrobials, has emerged as a potential diagnostic tool that could prove faster than culture. CMg indeed has the potential to detect …

. Introduction. For the growing number of children with in utero and postpartum exposure to HIV and/or antiretrovirals, it is unclear which exposures or risk factors play a significant role in predicting worse neurodevelopmental outcomes. This protocol describes a prospective longitudinal cohort study of infants born to mothers living with HIV and those born to mothers without HIV. We will determine which risk factors are most predictive of child neurodevelopment at 24 months. We aim to create a risk asse…

Vector management is a cornerstone in the fight against vector-borne pathogens. However, the impact on ecosystem functioning of reducing or eliminating arthropod vector populations remains poorly understood. Vectors are members of complex ecological communities, and recent studies suggest that their population suppression alters food web dynamics (bottom-up and top-down trophic cascades), inter- and intraspecific competition, and plant pollination. Other possible overlooked roles are also proposed.

A large clonal outbreak caused by vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) affected the Bern University Hospital group from the end of December 2017 until July 2020. We describe the characteristics of the outbreak and the bundle of infection prevention and control (IPC) measures implemented. The outbreak was first recognised when two concomitant cases of VRE bloodstream infection were identified on the oncology ward. During 32 months, 518 patients in the 1,300-bed hospital group were identified as va…
